"One day an army of grey-haired old women may quietly take over the world." - Goria Steinem.
Hamilton’s Grandmothers of Steel is proud to be a part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, a growing program of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF). We meet monthly and focus on various initiatives, including lobbying, education and fundraising activities. www.grandmothersofsteel.blogspot.com
Monthly guest speakers provide ongoing education around HIV/AIDS in Canada and Africa at our monthly meetings.
We speak to groups in the community and welcome opportunities to tell others about the work of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Grandmothers Campaign.
SLF is producing four films on our main areas of work 'Grandmothers' premiered at the Grandmothers' Gathering in August 2006, Orphans,' 'Women' and an 'Introduction to The Stephen Lewis Foundation.' The films examine the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals and communities in South Africa, Kenya, Zambia and Uganda.
The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign seeks to raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers who are raising their orphaned grandchildren. www.stephenlewisfoundation.org/grandmothers.htm http://www.grandmotherscampaign.org/
The Campaign was launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation on March 7, 2006. Since the launch, more than 150 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action and together have raised over $1 million for the campaign. SLF directs these funds to community-level organizations in 14 Sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support, such as food, housing grants, school fees for their grandchildren and grief counselling.
We are open to ALL women: we are students, married, single, aunts, mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers. The Stephen Lewis Foundation serves as a vehicle to send funds to grassroots projects that support grandmothers and their grandchildren.
GOALS OF THE GRANDMOTHERS TO GRANDMOTHERS CAMPAIGN: Encourage awareness in Canada about Africa’s grandmothers and their struggle to secure a hopeful future for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
Build solidarity among African and Canadian grandmothers and their friends in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Support actively groups of grandmothers in Africa who are dealing with the painful loss of their own children and struggling to care for AIDS orphans.
Provide funds to grandmothers with assistance through food, support for school attendance, income-generating projects, counseling and social support.
Fundraising – Prints and Beautiful cards featuring original artwork by Theresa Randles are available for purchase. http://www.art-in-canada.com/theresarandles
