AFRIGRAND CARAVAN - SEPT. 24TH

This incredible day started at McMaster University with our special guests, Regina Mokgokong and Nkulie Nowathe. High school students from Hamilton to Georgetown listened and asked questions of Regina and Nkulie as they talked about their lives in Mamelodi, South Africa and how AIDS has affected lives in their community. They praised Stephen Lewis and the Gandmothers to Grandmothers campaign for its commitment to funding the Tateni Home Care Nursing Services, of which Regina is executive director, and where Nkulie is a regular attendee there.

The following photos were taken this same day, while having lunch at the Williams Coffee Pub located in Harbour West,47 Discovery Drive, Hamilton.
Along with Regina and Nkulie were grandmothers from Grandmothers of Steel, Blooms for Africa, Oomama and Bronte

AFRIGRAND CARAVAN

September 24th, 2010
First Unitarian Church,
110 Dundurn St. South, Hamilton
7:30 p.m.

African Grandmothers and Granddaughters will be travelling across Canada from September to November on a tour to engage thousands of Candians as global citizens in the struggle to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Our special guests are:

Reina Mokgokong and Nkuli Nowathe, from Home Care Nursing Services in Mamelodi, South Africa. Tateni is funded by the Stephen Lewis Foundation and was one of the organizations visited by our Grandmother Delegates (Grandmothers of Steel was proudly represented by Lisbie Rae) during their trip to the African Grandmothers' Gathering.

Regina is a grandmother, nurse and Executive Director of Tateni – and an all-around powerhouse! Nkuli came under the care of Tateni when she lost her mother to AIDS. She speaks passionately about the power of peer support groups and education to help young people protect themselves from HIV.

We look forward to seeing you there.

PHOTOS FROM 'TURN THE TIDE' NATIONAL WALK

<

UPDATE ON 'STRIDE TO TURN THE TIDE' WALK

Our walk was a success. Although rain was called for it held off and actually turned out to be a great day for walking. We were truly blessed!

Those who participated had a wonderful time and the location was perfect Having music playing by Oldies 1150 added to the festive mood of the day.

Thanks to Rachael from Oldies 1150, who did a super job, there was an announcement about our walk, and a song was dedicated to us by ‘Rockin Ray’. Needless to say, we danced! The signs along the path were very effective, and our scarves stood out. Lots of photos were taken.

We and Mabibi Wa Tama were joined by a couple of Nyanya grannies from Niagara Falls, as well as a couple of grannies from Ottawa who were visiting in the area. Some people came off the street to make donations.

Special thanks to members who not only walked, but brought family and friends to walk as well. We walked a total of 313.5 kms.

The 4 prizes for top money generated go to Irene Turpie, Lisbie Rae, Dorothy Johns and Theresa Randles.

Though there may be some money yet to come in, our total at this point for Grandmothers of Steel is $11,794.00! We did well!
