FEBRUARY 2008 WORLD CITIZENSHIP AWARD
We are very proud to announce that Grandmothers of Steel is to be awarded

the World Citizenship Award for 2008 by the City of Hamilton Mundialization Committee.

The Award will be presented at a special event at Carmen’s Banquet Centre on May 8, 2008.

We are honoured to have Stephen Lewis as the guest speaker for the evening. Funds raised at this event will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. These funds will assist grandmothers in Africa raising their orphaned grandchildren, due to the loss of their parents to HIV/AIDS.

We would be delighted to have you join us. Tickets are $50.00 (no tax receipt), and be purchased through Carmen’s Banquet Centre Mon.-Fri., 9AM-5PM at (905) 387-0007 or toll free anytime 1-800-753-9857 and ask for ‘Carmen’s Box Office’.

Consider buying a table for 10 and join us in this evening of celebration! Sponsorship opportunities for the evening will receive tax receipts. Income Tax Receipts will be issued by the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Who We Are, What We Do:

The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign seeks to raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers who are raising their orphaned grandchildren. www.stephenlewisfoundation.org/grandmothers.htm

The Campaign was launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation on March 7, 2006. Since the launch, more than 150 groups of Canadian grandmothers have taken up the call to action and together have raised over $1 million for the campaign. SLF directs these funds to community-level organizations in 14
Sub-Saharan African countries that provide grandmothers with much needed support, such as food, housing grants, school fees for their grandchildren and grief counselling.

We are open to ALL women: we are students, married, single, aunts, mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation serves as a vehicle to send funds to grassroots projects that support grandmothers and their grandchildren.

GOALS OF THE GRANDMOTHERS TO GRANDMOTHERS CAMPAIGN:
Encourage awareness in Canada about Africa’s grandmothers and their struggle to secure a hopeful future for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.

Build solidarity among African and Canadian grandmothers and their friends in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Support actively groups of grandmothers in Africa who are dealing with the painful loss of their own children and struggling to care for AIDS orphans.

Provide funds to grandmothers with assistance through food, support for school attendance, income-generating projects, counseling and social support.
